The importance of laughter for problem-solving
Problem-solving involves using creative centers in the brain for inspiration. Whether you’re stumped by a crossword puzzle or a problem at work, you are in need of a moment of insight to help you solve it. Sudden insight is associated to increased activity in the anterior cingulated cortex (ACC) of the brain. This region can be activated by being in a positive mood. A recent study shows that a positive mood lead to increased ‘aha’ moments in solving puzzles.
So how can we apply this to our life? Whether at work or a hobby, elevating your mood will help you discover solutions and creative ideas. Watch a comedy, read a funny comic, listen to a comedian, read an inspirational book. Get yourself in a positive mood for tackling tough problems.
In the workplace, you can help the overall atmosphere at work by organizing things to help elevate everyone’s mood at work.
· Lunch brown-bag to watch a comedy show or movie.
· Book club to read inspirational works. This can be book related to how other businesses accomplished successful atmospheres (such as “The Pixar Way”), or an inspiring author in another life context.
· Share a weekly funny quote or comic with you coworkers. Can either print it out and display at your desk, email it to everyone, or post it on an internal blog or tweet network.
· Find a funny website to go to every time you need a break to elevate your mood.
· Get into a positive mood and come up with your own ideas!
